Reported Speech

PSC   പരീക്ഷകളിൽ ആവർത്തിച്ചു വരുന്ന ഒരു ചോദ്യ വിഭാഗമാണ്  reported speech .പഠിച്ചാൽ പരീക്ഷയിൽ ഒരു മാർക്ക് ഉറപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലുള്ള മുഴുവൻ ചോദ്യ മാതൃകകകളും പരിചയപ്പെടാം

74. Find the appropriate reported speech for the following :

“Keep quiet” said the mother to the child.

The mother asked the child _____

(a)  for keeping quiet

(b)  to keep quiet

(c)  should keep quiet

(d)  that it should have kept quiet

We can call this an 'order'(imperative sentence,starts with a verb) in English, when someone tells you very directly to do something. For example:

• Direct speech:” Keep quite” said the mother to the child.

when we tell another person about it. We simply use 'ask somebody + to + infinitive':

• The mother asked the child  to keep quiet.

Close the door! The doctor said to the nurse

The doctor asked the nurse to close the door.

 What if someone asks you to do something (in a polite way)? For example:

Hesaid to her “please wait here till i return”

we don't need to report every word when we tell another person about it. We simply use 'request somebody+ to + infinitive':

• He requested her to wait there till he returned

ഇവിടെ ഇത് കൂടാതെ മറ്റ് ചില മാറ്റങ്ങൾ കൂടി വന്നു

here-there ആയി

അത് പോലെ

I- he ആയി

Here's a table of some possible conversions:

പിന്നെ മാറ്റം വന്നത് verb ൻറെ ടെൻസിൽ ആണ്

He said to her “please wait here till i return”

He requested her to wait there till he returned

return -returned ആയി

Reporting verb past ആണെങ്കിൽ

Helping verb വരാതെ  verbന്റെ  v1 form ഓ  s form ഓ  വന്നാൽ  v2 ആക്കുക

V2 വന്നാൽ v2 ഓ  had+v3 യോ ആക്കുക

She  like ice cream ---- She said that she liked ice cream

ഇവിടെ Helping verb വരാതെ  verbന്റെ  v1 form (like) ആണ്  വന്നത്

അതുകൊണ്ട്  v2 (liked) ആക്കി

Helping verb വന്നാൽ  അതിനെ  മാത്രം past ആക്കുക

I am living in London---- She said that she was living in London

But, if the reporting verb is in the present tense, then there will be no change in the tenses in the reported speech:

I am living in London---- She says that she is living in London
