Question tags are the short questions that we put on the end of sentences – particularly in spoken English. വ്യത്യസ്‍തമായ ഒരു പാട് question tags ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും rules പഠിക്കാൻ എളുപ്പമാണ് 

Positive/negative 

positive statement → question tag negative → You are Tom, aren't you? 

negative statement → question tag positive → He isn't Joe, is he? 

Use Pronoun 

question tag-ൽ pronoun ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുക 

Subject ആയി വരുന്നത് വ്യക്തിയുടെയോ വസ്തുവിന്റെയോ പേരാണെങ്കിൽ അതിനു പകരം നിലക്കുന്ന pronoun, question tag-ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കണം (raghu -he ,usha -she cat -it dog and cat -they )

Eg:

• Rama is a techer,isn’t rama?
  
  
• Rama is a techer,isn’t he?
  
  

With auxiliary verbs

വാക്യത്തിലെ auxiliary verb തന്നെയാണ് Question tag ലും ഉപയോഗിക്കുക  

• They’ve gone away for a few days, haven’t they?
  
  
• They weren’t here, were they?
  
  

ഇതിനു വിരുദ്ധമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് used to ആണ്. അവിടെ used to എന്ന auxilary verb അല്ല question tag ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുക പകരം did ഉപയോഗിക്കണം

Without auxiliary verbs

Sentence ൽ auxiliary verb ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ question tag ൽ do,does,did ഇവയിൽ അനുയോജ്യമായത് ഉപയോഗിക്കാം 

I said that, didn’t I? 

You don’t recognise me, do you? 

She eats meat, doesn’t she? 

auxiliary verb-ഉം not-ഉം

Negative questiontag ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ auxiliary verb-ഉം not-ഉം വെവ്വേറെ ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത്. ഒന്നിച്ചുപയോഗിക്കണം. ഇവ ഒന്നിക്കുന്ന രീതി താഴെ കൊടുക്കുന്നു.

will not = won't do not = don't would not = wouldn't 

does not = doesn't shall not = shan't did not = didn't 

should not = shouldn't am not = aren't Cannot = can't 

is not = isn't could not = couldn't are not = aren't 

may not = mayn't was not = wasn't might not = mightn't 

were not = weren't must not = mustn't have not = haven't 

dare not = daren’t has not = hasn't need not = needn't 

had not = hadn’t ought not = oughtn't used not = didn't

With ‘I am’

Be careful with question tags with sentences that start ‘I am’. The question tag for ‘I am’ is ‘aren’t I?’ not amnt’I 

I’m the fastest, aren’t I?

Special points

Neither, no one, nobody, none, anyone, anybody, everyone,everybody, someone, somebody എന്നിവയിലൊന്നിൽ വാക്യം തുടങ്ങിയാൽ question tag-ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ട pronoun, they ആണ്. 

None of the boys are sincere, are they? 

Neither of your sisters are married, are they? No one helped her, did they 

Everyone was ready to support her, weren't they? (Everyone ഏകവചനമായതിനാൽ was എന്ന ഏകവചനക്രിയ ഉപയോ ഗിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ they ബഹുവചനമായതുകൊണ്ട് question tag-ൽ were എന്ന ബഹുവചനകിയതന്നെ ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.) 

Someone gave you the information, didn't they? 

വാക്യത്തിന്റെ subject ആയി വരുന്നത് this, that എന്നിവയാണെങ്കിൽ

question tag-ൽ it ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. These, those എന്നിവ വന്നാൽ they ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. 

This is a good mobile phone, isn't it? 

Those are your bikes, aren't they?

  

• Sentence ൽ‘There' subject ആയി വന്നാൽ question tag ൽ subject “There' തന്നെ എഴുതാം .

eg:- There are forty four rivers in Kerala, aren't there ?

• അതുപോലെ  sentence ൽ  ‘One' subjectആയി വന്നാൽ  question tag ലും subject "One' തന്നെയായിരിക്കും.

     eg:- One should come here, shouldn't one ?

• Although the negative word not is not in the sentence, the sentence can be negative. Then we use the positive question tag.

  Not-നു പുറമേ ഇനി പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ വന്നാലും വാക്യം negativeആകും. അതിനാൽ ഇവ വരുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങളുടെ question tag, positive ആയിരിക്കണം:

  no, never, nothing, no one, nobody, none, neither; barely, hardly, scarcely, rarely, seldom, few, little 

  He has no sister, has he?

  She will never trust you, will she?

• Rahul hardly knows the answer, does he?

• He never goes out with his dog, does he?

Use will/would with imperatives (Simple Present).

• Open the window, will you?

• Don't open your books, will you?
  
  

• ഒരു  simple imperative sentence അത്  positive ആയാലും negative ആയാലും question tag "will you? ആയിരിക്കും .

   eg:- Write legibly, will you ?

• തന്നിരിക്കുന്ന imperative sentence more urgency യെയാണ് കാണിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിൽ question tag "won't you ?' ആയിരിക്കും . eg:- Be careful while you are driving, won't you ?
• If an imperative sentence shows impatience question tag will be, can't you ?

eg:- Shut your mouth, can't you ?

We use won't with a polite request.

• Open the window, won't you?
  
  

We use shall after Let's.

• Let us (let's) എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന sentence of question tag സാധാരണ shall we? ആയിരിക്കും. Let's take the next bus, shall we?

• Let me ആണെങ്കിൽ will you ? ആയിരിക്കും.

I am late, aren't I?

• 'I'am' എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന  Positive sentence ൻറെ  question tag aren't I ? എന്നായിരിക്കും (amn’t I എന്നെഴുതരുത്).

       eg:- I am a student, aren't I ?

This form is commonly used (mostly informal). It is because there is no contracted form for am + not (amn't). 

•    'I am not’എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന  ‘Negative sentence ൻറെ question tag am I ? എന്നായിരിക്കും.

        eg:- I am not a student, am I ?

Sentence - ൽ രണ്ടോ അതിലധികമോ auxiliary verb ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ auxiliary verb ആണ് question tag-ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്.

eg:- She could have gone there, couldn't she ?

He should have finished it, shouldn't he ?

won't =will + not 

അതുകൊണ്ട് will you ?

വാക്യത്തിന്റെ subject ആയി വരുന്നത് this, that എന്നിവയാണെങ്കിൽ

question tag-ൽ it ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. These, those എന്നിവ വന്നാൽ they ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.

(these,those,few,a few,everybody,everyone,somebody,someone,anyone,anybody,anyone,nobody,noone,neither,either,each,some of them,all of them എന്നിവ സബ്ജക്ട് ആയി വന്നാൽ question tag ൽ pronoun they

8.Rahul hardly knows the answer,------?

Do he?

does he?

Hardly he?

Doesn’t he?

ഇവിടെ auxiliary verb sentence ൽ ഇല്ല .Sentence ൽ auxiliary verb ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ question tag ൽ do,does,did ഇവയിൽ അനുയോജ്യമായത് ഉപയോഗിക്കാം 

verb knows എന്നായതുകൊണ്ട് does ആണ് question tag ൽ auxiliary verb 

Not-നു പുറമേ ഇനി പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ വന്നാലും വാക്യം negativeആകും. അതിനാൽ ഇവ വരുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങളുടെ question tag, positive ആയിരിക്കണം:

He’d done that before, _____ he? ഇവിടെ sentence ൽ auxiliary verb he'd =he + had ആണോ he +would ആണോ എന്ന് സംശയം വരും . would ,will can could shall എന്നിവക്കു ശേഷം verb ന്റെ v1 form ആണ് വരിക .എന്നാൽ has have had എനിവക്ക് ശേഷം verb ന്റെ v3 ഫോം ആണ് വരിക 

അതിനാൽ he'd done =he + had+ done എന്നാണ് 

അതുകൊണ്ട് question ടാഗ് hadn't he 

Drinking and driving do not go together,
